The Colour of Awareness

December 1st is World AIDS Day…
Did you know that the Caribbean has the 2nd highest rate of HIV prevalence in the world? Regional and Global trends alert us that this not a time to be complacent, yet how much are we doing to protect ourselves and one another from HIV?

Take a stance against HIV.
Take a stance against AIDS.
Take a stance against the stigma and discrimination which continues to fuel this pandemic.

The Colour of Awareness” dress down day.
Wear RED on December 1st.

Make the promise to join the fight and keep it.

HIV/AIDS Awareness

In March 2003, the Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) launched the ‘Together We Can’ (TWC) HIV/AIDS Peer Education Programme.

Developed by the Jamaican and American Red Cross Societies in conjunction with the World Health Organization, TWC is a programme that empowers young people with the correct information about HIV/AIDS and gives them the responsibility to pass that information on to their friends.

Young people between the ages of 13 and 18 are trained as Peer Educators during a three day session where they get to discuss not only the basics of HIV/AIDS transmission, but also testing, negotiation skills, stigma and discrimination, and condom use.

Volunteers between the ages of 19 and 35 are trained as Instructor Trainers and National Trainers to help train Peer Educators.

In December 2005, the success of this programme was recognised when the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies chose the CIRC and the Cayman Islands to launch the “Faces” campaign.

“Nobody has the truth written on their face.
Protect yourself. Use a condom.”
