Haiti Appeal Update
WEDNESDAY, January 20, 2010 - Following the scare caused by the earthquake felt in Grand Cayman on Tuesday, January 19th, the Cayman Islands Red Cross would like to remind the public of the importance of having a comprehensive family disaster plan so that residents of all ages can feel better prepared in the event of any disaster.
In the wake of the devastation in Haiti it is important for parents to talk to their children about disasters, and use this opportunity to educate them about safety measures, as well as to the review your own family’s plans. Those needing assistance on how to create a family disaster plan should contact the Red Cross for further information.
As today’s events have brought the reality in Haiti a bit closer to home, the Red Cross is happy to report that its appeal for the victims of the Haiti earthquake has surpassed the $100,000 mark. The Red Cross would like to thank the public for its generosity, and to encourage persons to continue to offer their support to such a worthwhile cause. Proceeds from the Thrift Shop sales between January 19th and 30th will go directly into the Haiti earthquake appeal, so persons wishing to donate goods can do so by stopping by the Red Cross Shop or contacting the Thrift Shop Manager at 949-6785 ext. 31 or 916-8954.
One hundred percent (100%) of all funds collected by the Cayman Islands Red Cross will go directly to Haiti. Donations can still be made directly to the Red Cross (#34 Huldah Avenue, beside Barnett Music Centre), to Butterfield Bank under the Cayman Islands Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Appeal Account (02-201-035054-04) or to the Scotia Bank Accounts under the Cayman Islands Red Cross Earthquake Appeal. DONATE NOW!
MONDAY January 18, 2010 - The Cayman Islands Red Cross would like to thank the residents of the Cayman Islands for their generous and heart felt response to the victims of the Haiti Earthquake. Between January 13th and January 18th, the Cayman Islands Red Cross raised over $83,000 CI towards its relief efforts.
This is extremely encouraging, specially now where the International Red Cross appeal for Haiti has increased from US$10 million to US$103million as the teams on the ground have completed their assessments for the needs of the most vulnerable victims.
We continue to ask private citizens, organizations and companies to give as little or as much as they can at this point in time as every dollar is a tremendous help. However, please ensure that you are giving to organizations that will get the funds to Haiti. One hundred percent (100%) of the Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Appeal will go directly to Haiti.
Also, we ask that private individuals organizing cash collections kindly coordinate with the Red Cross prior to embarking on any such endeavour, and that companies who are allowing for such activity to take place on their premises verify with the Red Cross if there are any questions as to the legitimacy of the collection.
The Cayman Islands Red Cross is still *NOT* collecting any goods to be sent to Haiti at this time. There continues to be logistical and security concerns which have hindered efforts to get these donations to the most vulnerable in Haiti. However, the Cayman Islands Red Cross will be donating 100% of funds raised via the sale of goods in its Thrift Shop between January 19th and January 30th to the Haiti appeal. Persons wishing to donate items in GOOD QUALITY can do so by dropping it off to the Red Cross or contacting 916-8954 to schedule a pick up.
Tracing and messaging continues to the available to residents of the Cayman Islands looking for family and friends in Haiti. Persons needing assistance should contact 949-6785 ext. 27 or 916-1742 or email tracing requests to

Urgent Haiti Earthquake Appeal
THURSDAY, January 14, 2010 - At minutes to 5pm on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010, the small island nation of Haiti was hit with a magnitude 7.3 earthquake, making it the worst earthquake to hit the nation in the past two centuries. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 10 miles south-west of the capital city Port-au-Prince. Currently it is estimated that 1 in 3 persons have been affected.
The Cayman Islands Red Cross will be taking tracing requests from Cayman residents who have family members living in Haiti. HOWEVER, due to the near total devastation of communication equipment on the ground, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Haiti is currently focusing on getting messages from Haitians to family members abroad. The CIRC will be monitoring the situation, and as soon as communication capacity is re-established it will be working to restore family links between Cayman residents and their families in Haiti. In the meantime, requests should be sent to
